HIKING FROM YOUR DOOR

Take your family on a walk through the national forest—without even moving your car.

There are miles and miles of hiking trails here, with gentle hikes perfect for kids.

  • For a short walk, take a look at the old water wheel that used to provide power for the cabins.  It’s an easy 10-minute walk past some private cabins.
  • If you’re willing to go a little further, try our loop trail.  You’ll cross Deep Creek twice (make sure to stick your hand in the water—it’s cold!) and then go through a ravine to a beautiful viewpoint of the White River Valley.  The second half of the loop is a fairly steep downhill (but we have lots of guests with 3 year olds who take it) and it brings you right back to our field.  The whole thing is just a mile roundtrip.
  • A little further still is the hike to Goat Falls.  This hike is fantastic and, in fact, it’s listed in The Mountaineers’ “Best Hikes With Kids”.  It’s about 3 miles roundtrip from Alta Crystal.  Along the way, there are lots of opportunities for wading or throwing rocks.  Goat Falls itself is a gorgeous 20-foot waterfall next to some huge cliffs.  Enjoy.

There are dozens of other hikes in the national forest that are perfect for kids.  We can give you lots more information when you check in, but some of our favorite kid-friendly hikes include:

  • Greenwater Lakes.  A 3-mile roundtrip hike to 2 gorgeous lakes surrounded by alpine peaks.
  • Snoquera Falls:  A 3-mile roundtrip hike to a beautiful waterfall.
  • Federation Forest State Park:  Miles and miles of trails through the old-growth forest.
