Sunrise on July 9, 2012Tue Jul 10, 2012
Ask anyone who lives around here, and they’ll tell you Sunrise is their favorite area of Mt. Rainier National Park. It’s the highest point to which you can drive in all the Cascades (6400’)—with awesome panoramic views and great hikes. It is also much more exposed than Paradise, and tends to melt out really quickly once summer arrives.
In fact, we took a quick jaunt up to Sunrise yesterday to see the snow melt for ourselves. Last week, we sent some people snowshoeing by the Visitors Center—and this week, the area called Sourdough Ridge is almost all melted out! Several of our guests did the Frozen Lake and Shadow Lake hikes over the weekend, and even though there’s still snow, both trails are easily hikable in decent hiking boots.
